Compliance Training Core Topics

Compliance training can seem like a daunting and broad subject to tackle. However, we’ve found that breaking down compliance into the following core topics helps create a big-picture understanding of the training requirements.

  • HIPAA Compliance: The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 keeps the health data of individuals private and safe.  It is absolutely necessary to provide HIPAA compliance training to avoid incurring legal violations.
  • Department of Transportation (DOT Compliance): DOT regulations include equipment and vehicle training, drug testing in the workplace, and other basic safety compliance regulations.  If any of these compliance regulations apply to your business, you should provide training in this area for your employees.
  • Designated Employer Representative (DER) Compliance: DERs should have a strong understanding of their workplace’s drug and alcohol testing policies.  The DER’s duties involve not only knowing his or her own role, but also the roles of other key players, such as laboratory personnel, in the testing process.
  • PHMSA Compliance: The Pipelines and Hazardous Material Safety Administration is a smaller department within the DOT.  PHMSA creates and enforces regulations for the transportation of hazardous materials. PHMSA also has drug and alcohol testing policies.
  • OSHA Compliance: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is an agency of the US Department of Labor that works to assure safe working conditions “by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance” (Source:  To achieve OSHA certification, your company must understand and comply with the required federal laws and regulations.
