DigitalChalk: As Featured on Capterra: 6 Questions to Ask Before Choosing an LMS

When you are in the market for an LMS, it is critical to compare and contrast all options, services, and features available.

We’ve created a step-by-step guide to finding the best LMS for you. Before you make your LMS decision, be sure to ask yourself these questions:

  1. Why do you need an LMS?
Businesses and professionals seek an LMS for many different reasons and they can often times be costly and time-consuming.
  2. What are your most important LMS features?
With so many different LMS options, it is important to do your research and compare each one to your needs. While LMSs have a variety of key features, most do have the necessities.
  3. What expectations do you have?
If you’ve never had an LMS before, you may or may not have some reasonable expectations. It is always recommended to have a live demonstration of your LMS prior to signing up – that way you’ll know whether or not the LMS fits your expectations. If you’ve had an LMS before, you likely have a good idea of what you do and do not need.
  4. Who is your audience?
As mentioned in #1, there are a number of reasons to find an LMS. Are you training staff and employees, or selling courses to customers? If you are selling courses, your LMS must have built-in ecommerce features. If you are training staff and employees, you may need mass user registration features.
  5. What is the skill level of your course administrators?
At the beginning of your research, establish the skill level of your course administrators and identify any technical challenges you may have. This will help determine how easy you need your LMS to be.
  6. What is your budget?
Don’t overlook your budget requirements during your research. Instead of wasting time looking at LMSs that are out of your price range, establish your budget right away and stick to it.

By asking yourself and your team these six questions, you’ll ultimately save time and money with choosing the right LMS. Quit wasting time and get started! What do you do once you’ve found the perfect LMS? Check out these tips on how to successfully launch your LMS.
